god ain't us

Last week I heard Steve Earle talking on the radio about this song, and how he loves it. So good to be able to appreciate your own work. Know when you like it. Know when you don't.

oh yes. I'm sloooowly building up my miles with an eye on a half marathon this fall, but if I had to explain the glory of long runs I could not possibly do it more succinctly than this ole turkey ad.

we don't even have jamba juice in VA

...but this slays me, y'all.

it's from thugkitchen. my new favorite place on the internet. i try not to swear on the internet, because.... it's the internet, and so it's available to everyone i work with, the kids from the school where i teach, the parents of kids who might go to the school that chased the fly, that ran from the frog that was afraid of the cat who ran from the dog, who ran from the cow, et cetera, et cetera, aka everyone, aka you, aka you again, aka oknotyou, alias: ilovethugkitchen.

in the barlight, she looked alright

A friend of mine recently told me that a Hold Steady show in Richmond sometime this past year was like 90% dudes. For some reason this kind of disappointed me? Kind of wanted to prove that women loved the hold steady, too? Battle of the sexes? Where my girls at? ....but then I remembered I needed a snack, and that I needed to pay my rent so I really couldn't spend too much time on this project, and then later on I realized that this women-love-them-too thing was not really my Hold Steady cross to bear.

Instead I want everyone - every man, woman, and child - to recognize that the guy singing Sugar High at the end of Empire Records is doing a killer Craig Finn impression.

so easy you can't say no

I liked this article about motivating yourself to exercise when you don't feel like it.

The author suggests making the first part of your work-out routine so easy you can't say no. This is some 5-star advice, y'all.

My current work-out routine starts a lil sumpin like this:

1. Put on work-out clothes. (easy)
2. Choose a playlist on my computer. (sometimes easy)
3. Set an alarm on my phone for 15 minutes. (easy)
4. Stretch. (easy)
5. Leave house for a run. (easier than it was 17 minutes ago)

This is not rocket surgery, but the music is key for me and so is the time restriction/ structure on the stretching.

If I've started the clock, and I start futzing around (eg - texting someone; looking up who's birthday it is on facebook; wondering what I would say to Bob Dylan if I ever met him; wondering whether I would even actually want to meet Bob Dylan; changing directions and wondering what I would want to ask Pete Seeger about if I met him; thinking about how nice and awesome Pete Seeger seems; wondering what this blog post was about...) I come back to stretching, because otherwise I'm cheating myself out of that day's meager 15 minutes of stretching. And stretching feels good. And it's easy. So I don't say no.
